Gameplay
Action in LEGO Rock Band is nearly identical to the familiar flow of Rock Band gameplay, only with a LEGO twist. Your goal is to run through a succession rock tinged family friendly song tracks with your band, consisting in multiplayer modes of up to four avatars in LEGO form controlled with guitar, bass guitar, microphone and drum controllers. The game features compatibility with most existing Rock Band and Guitar Hero instrument controllers for the appropriate platform. One of the fun LEGO influences is in the tablature flowing across the screen that directs your play. This is in the form of LEGO blocks color coded for each controller. As players successfully complete songs and rock challenges, they can collect LEGO 'studs,' with which they can customize their avatar and other in-game goodies in true LEGO Snap-On fashion. In addition, players can unlock additional content and collect amazing vehicles, which can transport their band from local gigs at rock clubs to epic stadium shows and even fantasy settings on Earth and beyond. The game contains a variety of play modes including Quickplay and Challenge, and will feature music both supplied on the game disc as well as downloadable content.

1. The songs are family friendly
2. There are no half-naked women or demons performing on stage or in the background. I realize Guitar Hero is generally appealing to the peripubescent teen (successfully so), but as the father of 2 daughters, I'm not thrilled with every female character in Guitar Hero presented in such a trashy manner. The boys have a variety of characters to choose from, but if you're a girl... you're a trashy ho. Sorry... but that's GH.
3. The story-line is very humorous. My wife and I have even loved playing just the two of us in the evening after the kids go to bed.
4. You can turn off the drum pedal!!!!! That has elevated the enjoyment of playing the drums for everyone.
5. Extra easy mode is perfect for the little ones.
6. Highly personalizable on many levels. This could really bog down the kids since there is SOOOO much you can individualize, but it adds another, almost SIMS, dimension to the game
6. Great way to get everyone involved playing a game
This is definitely a game everybody will enjoy since it has the classic LEGO humor. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend it. ROCK ON!
We LOVE the super easy, no fail mode for the younger kids and for those of us learning how to use the different instruments, especially those of us with no rhythm, lol. It makes it so much more fun to play because it isn't as frustrating.
Recommended for anyone who can hold a microphone or one of the instruments. :-)

1) the graphics of the singers (lego people) is very low resolution, when compared to the frets and notes sliding down the guitar neck on screen. The animation between songs seems to have higher quality, but I wasn't playing it for the trailers.
2) Maybe it is me being rusty, but the calibration is really goofy, or I'm getting real uncoordinated in my older age. The level of error in the strum was little. Maybe the GH games are more relaxed in their tolerances. Beatles RB didn't seem to have this issue though.
I'll need to research the playing differences of the games more. But, I am not a gamer. I look at game console games at most 2 hours a week, so my level of experience is low.
But with this version - you can play along not only without a penalty for choosing 'easy', you can even choose a super easy/no fail mode so you simply can't mess up and still have fun playing. If you don't do anything you won't get the stars you need but if you do a minimal amount (i.e. hit ANY drum pad when the note needs to be played or 'strum' the guitar/bass at the right time - no need to press a button - or simply speak in time to the microphone) you'll be fine.
Lots of the same fun things as in Rock Band - make your own people, buy cool outfits & things for them. In addition this version has challenges which you can play and fun lego scenes occur as you 'rock' the house (typically you earn these as you successfully play songs in venues). The first one (and on a trailer so I'm not giving much away) is playing loud enough (getting enough stars) to knock down a building. And yes, we have successfully completed these challenges with two out of the three on the no fail mode.
This version is clearly geared for a slightly younger set - both in terms of the no-fail option and in terms of avoiding excessive profanity/explicit content in songs. Makes us no never mind - we're enjoying it immensely!
edited to add:
The review who said this does not have online support is right. For those familiar with Rockband, this version is like a hybrid track pack. You get new people, scenarios and venues to work your way through, but the songs are the songs which are included and you cannot buy new songs to play (I can't see that this'd change with this version - going to the online store to buy new tracks is not even shown as an option).
Top reviews from other countries
In the regular rockband game if you miss a certain amount of notes or beats you can get booed out of the song, but this version is very kid friendly.
The only drawback is that you cannot buy additional Rock Band songs online.
