What We Think
Fun Factor:
Durability:
(what this means)
The Good: Look at familiar objects in a whole new way; review images on a TV or computer
The Bad: Learning to focus the eye takes practice
In a Nutshell: Unique video microscope provides creepy close-ups and informal science lessons

Ages: 8 and olderRequires: 5 AA batteries; TV and/or computer for full effect
A belt clip battery pack makes it easy to take the BioniCam anywhere. View larger.
Even old blue jeans look cool viewed through the BioniCam. View Larger. Magnify Your World,
To get started, simply insert five AA batteries (not included) into the belt clip battery pack, insert the included USB memory stick into the top of the BioniCam, and turn the unit on. With the camera's ergonomically shaped handle in one hand, you can focus on any number of everyday objects--such as coins, fabric, your pet's fur, or your own hair and skin. The magnified images appear in real time and full color on the LCD screen. Below the screen, you'll find easy to use buttons that allow you to navigate the menu, select video or photo options, review your gallery, and delete unwanted images.
A zoom dial offers either 100x, 200x or 400x magnification. To focus an image, twist the I.R.I.S. lens attachment until you achieve the results you're looking for. Getting a crisp image takes a little patience at first, especially at the highest magnification. But with practice and with the help of the easy-to-read focusing gauge, you'll be focusing the lens in no time.
Photos and Video Without Complicated Setup
With no software to upload and minimal set-up, the BioniCam makes sharing discoveries easy. Plug the USB memory stick directly into your computer for quick access to images, then save and edit them or post them to your blog. Alternately, you can use the included video cable to display images on your TV. When you are plugged into the TV, the LCD screen turns off, but you still retain all the functionality of the BioniCam. This makes reviewing huge enlargements in real time a fun group activity.
Contagious Fun for the Whole Family
The hand-held magnification "eye" is fun to hold and makes it easy for your child to explore the microscopic world without complicated scientific instruments. Viewing the magnified images on your computer or TV screen in full, vivid color encourages kids to take learning into their own hands and provides numerous opportunities for parents and children to play fun and educational games together.
The excitement of seeing objects in your child's everyday world magnified to up to 400 times is sure to be a hit with whole family. Fortunately, the lightweight, durable plastic unit fits comfortably into both small and large hands. And if you need some help getting started, the easy-to-read instruction booklet offers lots of tips for finding items that hide interesting textures, from pine needles to sponges and insects.
On the lowest setting, the LEDs occasionally prove too bright for viewing lighter-colored objects, and these images may remain unclear on large viewing screens. On the higher magnification settings, however, this did not seem to be a problem, as textures and colors came through flawlessly. And while the battery pack makes it easy to explore indoors and out, the LCD screen can be tough to read in direct sunlight.
Overall, these are minor concerns that should do nothing to prevent this fun, educational toy from being big hit with all kinds of kids.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2011First of all, I must apologize to all the people who read my previous, useless reviews. I will try harder to stick to the topic and provide detailed information that will help you all. Anyway, to business. The Bionicam. Yes, it is great, a wonderful magnifying toy that helped me identify what might be two lunar meteorites, according to a meteoricist friend of mine. But, it is a finnicky, fickle toy that is very sensitive. I would not recommend this toy unless you have a neurosurgeons steady hands, because it shows every movement your gripping hand makes, down to the pulse of blood through your veins. The IRIS is also difficult to focus and requires lots of trial and error to get the right focus for each individual object you are magnifying. If this sounds more like work than fun, you might be right, and would probably do better in not getting this. For someone who seriously needs a photographic microscope with video capability, this is, I repeat, not a photographic microscope with video capability. This is a high magnification toy with photographic and video capabilities. If you are someone like me, who needed a microscope that could take pictures, upload them to a computer, and do whatever you want with those pictures, this toy is a little too much work, and too little reward. BUT! If you are like everyone else who has a casual interest in the world around you up close and personal, and want to take pictures of flies and beetles, carpets and upholstery, fabrics, hairs, fibers, flowers, plants, animals, inorganic materials, etc. and show the world your findings, than this is perfect for you! Oh, and a few tips. Be prepared to buy truckloads of AA batteries for this product. Keep the focusing disk, you will need it. Try using a fixed platform vise to hold the Bionicams handle, (not too hard on the handle, its only cheap plastic, after all!), and a portable vise for the object being viewed. Try viewing plants, they are really cool up close. And be prepared to spend hours trying to get the perfect photo or video, if you so choose. Be patient with it, it is not a perfect toy, after all. Try setting the lighting to low on the menu screen, if you are viewing a crystalline substance, as it reflects badly when the lighting is on high or medium. And, most importantly, not to sound lame or anything, but have fun with it. Hope this helps.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2009This is totally awesome! A must have gift for any child interested in the sciences, and a gift that can spark an interest in science!
The hand held microscope works very well, gave it as a Christmas present, and we tested it right away. You have to put the unit right against what you are trying to view. Subjects are lit up by white leds (more could be better) and displayed at decent resolution on the lcd screen.
Saving photos are easy and they reside on the usb stick which is included. The unit is lightweight and easy to carry around.
This is an amazing toy that really gets kids exploring and learning about the natural world all around them!
The only cons I thought It had was that its in a weird shape of a gross eye (less appealing to girls?) and the focusing ring (the white part) should have been independent as when turning it at high magnifications can cause you to lose the subject as it has to be right up against the material.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2009I got this toy for my 8 year old. It took us forever to undertand how to focus as the instructions are not really clear and the little card to look into in order to see the letters and focus (imagine an eye exam) are extremely hard to do. All you see is nothing... so we almost returned the toy. In the end we realized that if you put the things literally into the lens then you see things, then it became fun for my son. Another warning it eats battery like crazy and it takes 5 batteries and no recharchables!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2008Got this for a 6 year old, knowing I would use it with her. When first opened, I was concerned how easy it would be to use. Once you give it a few tries, it works OK. The trick is to get the object right in front of the lens (basically covering/touching the object).
It has 3 mag levels (100x, 200x, 400x). I find that only 100x is practical. The other 2 make the object too big to be indentifiable and almost impossible to take a good photo.
When you take a photo you need to hold it steady for 2-3 seconds. This can be tricky for kids. If the object is a living creature (ant), it will be practically impossible to follow the object and take the photo (and a video may be a better option).
Focusing is best done while not viewing the object. What I found useful is to zoom into the object, estimate the focus needed, adjust, and then zoom in again.
Taking the photos to the PC is a breeze. It has a small (32 MB) USB drive that you remove and connect to your PC just like any other USB drive.
You can also take videos and it works OK, very much like the photo functions, except you take 5-10 seconds of video.
For the price it's a cool toy. My 6 year old was very impressed when she saw a closeup of her shirt, her skin, a dollar bill, and a few other objects.
And it's portable. Takes 5 AA batteries and it's very easy to carry in a bag or backpack.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2009This device is not really useable in its prsent design. The magnification specs looks good but the 200x and 400x are completly unuseable. The 100x is sometimes useable. They should have gone with something like 25x, 50x and 100x with better focusing mechanixm. Would not recommend it in current configuration.

4.0 out of 5 stars Super microscope portatif

5.0 out of 5 stars Microscope familiale

5.0 out of 5 stars Für kleine und große Forscher!

4.0 out of 5 stars Oui mais non mais oui...
En revanche, dès qu'on éloigne l'I.R.I.S., l'image disparaît.
Brrrh...
